Sculpture Parks Satisfy the Longings of Lovers of Art and the Outdoors

Storm King is the largest and best known outdoor sculpture park in the tri-state area. But It's not the only one. A quick search reveals at least 10 such parks around New York City, many with first rate works by outstanding artists ranging from the late 19th century to the present. New York has the pick of them, although New Jersey and Connecticut also have worthwhile sites. Surprisingly, few are well known to the public.

What follows is a rough guide to some of the best sites to view outdoor sculpture in the tri-state area. Most cater to families with children and provide rest rooms, picnic areas and other amenities. All you need is a hat, a good pair of shoes and plenty of sun screen.

Everyone I talked to was disappointed with the state of sculpture parks and gardens in Connecticut. That's because the one at Yale University Art Gallery is under renovation, while the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield is selling off its high quality outdoor sculpture collection, as well as its other works, as part of an upcoming renovation.
